one month without caffeine

Inspired by my friend Ava’s one month without caffeine, I decided to do the same and not drink caffeine for at least a month. My worst offender is mate, a drink that is always planted on my desk and that I drink throughout the day pretty much non-stop.

I don't notice any difference whatsoever when I drink mate. I notice things being a bit brighter with coffee, but mate just warms my heart and feels like it's just the best and coziest drink ever. I drink it out of habit for the most part. When I'm not able to, I can go without just fine.

Still, I know that it’s a caffeinated drink and that’s enough to turn me off from it. The reason why I’ve been holding off from quitting for so long is that mate is not drunk the same way coffee is. You fill a cup with mate powder and then just drink from the same cup that you refill with hot water which waters down the caffeine concentration a bit. The same powder can last for a half liter of water.

As for coffee, I drink it occasionally on mornings with my parents or when I’m running on fumes from handful of hours of sleep (it’s a desperate measure that doesn’t actually help my ADHD brain wake up). I drink coffee almost as often as matcha which I usually treat myself to after a long day. For the next month, though, these two are also off the table.

I hope I don’t forget about this project and “relapse” out of habit. I will check back in a week or two’s time for a status update.
